Google CEO Eric Schmidt has made a stunning announcement. He said that anonymity would decline soon «to prevent data misuse for criminal and antisocial purposes».
«The only way to keep control over the situation is high transparency and no anonymity. The world of anonymous attack is too dangerous without any means of personal identification. We need a name base for people. It will also be necessary for governments.»
Today US providers have the right to pass all personal details of their client to Security service on their request without notifying him/her. Modern Internet user is almost deprived of anonymity.
Indeed, anonymity in the Web leads to such negative phenomena like piracy or fraud, uncontrolled spamming, distributing viruses or porn, etc. Many would like to hedge both themselves and their kids. It can be provided by compulsory user identification.
«Free Web» with all its drawbacks is characterized by its unbiassed approach compared to mass media. User identification system will allow to perform overall control over what people think or do in the information environment. The states would like to use their opportunity of control «for good». Nobody is protected from new tyranies allowing the only way of thinking in the web, the «right» one. Certainly, these and other dangers do exist, however, the Web is moving towards anonymity decay.
